About Pluribus Digital:

Join us and do work that matters. Use your skills to improve how your government serves the public! Pluribus partners with government customers to design, develop, and deliver impactful digital products. We are a hands-on digital services consultancy – part technologists, part change agents, and all heart. We employ modern best practices to improve public health and benefits, regulate the financial industry, grant citizenship and asylum, and provide secure identity and access management.

About the Role:

The Director of Software Engineering will report to the Chief Operating Officer. This is a leadership position responsible for managing individual contributors and other managers while also serving as a practitioner on client work. You play a crucial role in talent development, technical strategy, and cross-team collaboration while ensuring our teams deliver software solutions using modern technologies and best practices. As a technical expert, your primary work may not be hands-on-keyboard. You connect the dots between business, team, project, and technology needs. You identify and mitigate risks and provide solutions.

What you will do:

  • Lead and support a culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement within the Software Engineering capability.
  • Establish and track OKRs and KPIs to measure success in company-wide Software Engineering initiatives.
  • Act as a fractionally billable practitioner on one or more projects, staying connected to hands-on software engineering challenges.
  • Ensure technical excellence and adoption of best practices across our programs.
  • Support technical solutions, proposal development, and market research efforts.
  • Oversee hiring, succession planning, and staffing strategy, working closely with the Chief Operating Officer and the Talent team.
  • Drive talent development through practice community meetings, training, and mentorship opportunities.
  • Manage bench time utilization, ensuring career growth opportunities for team members.
  • Collaborate with other directors to ensure high-level cross-capability engagement.

What you will bring:

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Public Trust Clearance.
  • Must have experience managing managers of a 40+ person group within a consulting organization.
  • Bachelor’s degree in any discipline or equivalent demonstrated experience.
  • 10+ years of software development team leadership and people management, showing a progression of increased responsibilities over time.
  • Experience developing success indicators and goals for software engineering teams (as appropriate to project and environment).
  • Experience partnering with product, UX, and cloud engineering peers across teams and programs.
  • Experience growing talent through hiring, mentoring, and hands-on career development in alignment with a career model.
  • Expertise in legacy software modernization and architecting applications for the cloud.
  • Expertise in Agile & DevSecOps-based delivery.
  • Expertise in technical writing, presentation writing, and proposal development.

BONUS:

  • Experience delivering on public sector projects.
  • Certifications in Agile software development methodologies.
  • Certifications in cloud platforms and related technologies.

Why Pluribus May Be a Fit for You

  • We are purpose driven. We support missions and products that serve the public good, and where our focused capabilities positively impact those mission outcomes. We bring a consultative approach to partner with our government customers and help them succeed as change makers.
  • Pluribus is a calm company. We are knowledge workers. People do their best work when they are not rushed by artificial urgency or drained by a culture of facetime and workaholism. By having confidence in our people, we can get more done at better quality. When real crunch time comes, we are not already stretched to the limit.
  • We are stronger because of the variety of skills and personal backgrounds of our team. We hold ourselves accountable with annual reporting on diversity statistics. As a woman owned and led company, diversity, equity, and inclusion is woven into all aspects of the organization.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Pluribus Digital offers a competitive salary that is determined at the time of offer. We are hiring for multiple levels under this job posting. Compensation will be based on experience and qualifications, with salary ranges aligned accordingly. If a candidate is a strong fit at a more junior or senior level to what is outlined here, we will assess them accordingly and apply the appropriate salary range during the hiring process. The range for this specific role is from $190,000 - 205,000 depending on experience. Based in London with hybrid working (2 days per week in the office), you’ll lead our Data Platform team through an exciting period of growth and strategic delivery.

This is a leadership role focused on our high performing team, delivery and operational excellence. You’ll lead engineering managers, ICs and teams, shape the Data Platform roadmap, oversee strategic technology partners and vendors, and ensure our platform continues to operate reliably at scale. We’re looking to move fast so you must be available to join by mid-late September 2026.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Drive quarterly planning, governance and operational oversight across the Data Platform portfolio.
  • Build trusted relationships with senior stakeholders across Engineering, Product, Commercial and Data teams.
  • Own strategic vendor relationships, supplier performance, commercial governance and contract oversight.
  • Partner with Procurement and Finance to maximise value from technology investments.
  • Ensure the reliability, scalability and operational health of the Data Platform.
  • Maintain Technology Risk ownership and support operational readiness during peak trading periods.
  • Champion engineering excellence through continuous improvement, governance and sustainable platform operations.
  • Translate organisational strategy into clear delivery priorities and operational roadmaps.
  • Improve engineering processes, ways of working and organisational effectiveness.
  • Support organisational design, hiring, succession planning and leadership development.
  • Coach Engineering Managers and help develop high-performing teams.

About you:

  • Experience leading Data Engineering, Platform Engineering or Data Platform teams
  • We’d love to hear from experienced Senior Data Engineering Managers, Heads of Data Engineering, Heads of Platform Engineering or similar technology leaders looking for their next challenge.
  • Proven experience leading managers and building high-performing engineering teams.
  • Strong programme delivery experience, with a track record of delivering strategic roadmaps across multiple teams.
  • Excellent stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence technical and non-technical leaders.
  • Experience managing technology vendors, supplier relationships and commercial governance.
  • Comfortable balancing operational delivery with long-term planning and organisational priorities.
  • Strong understanding of engineering operations, governance and platform reliability.
  • A background in Data Engineering, Platform Engineering or Data Platforms, with the ability to work effectively alongside technical specialists. Deep technical architecture expertise isn’t essential.
  • Confident leading through ambiguity, bringing clarity and direction in evolving environments.
  • Experience with cloud data platforms such as Snowflake, dbt and AWS would be beneficial.
  • Experience working within a high-growth technology business or exposure to AI and Machine Learning platforms would be an advantage.
